BIG antique owl wisdom cast iron bookends Judd Co, near mint, 1925, 9 lbs

  
Wonderful - and not often seen - bookends in the form of a "bust" of an owl, head and tops of wings, presented on a base decorated with ivy leaves. Great detail to the feathers. These were intended as bookends but I think their size and imposing image make them ideal as display pieces, opposite ends of a shelf or mantel, perhaps. Cast iron (yes, a magnet sticks) by Judd Co, their stock number 9738 cast into the backs, and given Judd's verde antique green finish for the base and their bronze finish for the owl itself.

This is fairly typical Judd 3-piece construction: owl and base cast separately, along with a base plate, and all secured by screws in the bottom. No damage, only minor dings and abrasions around the edges. Finish is pristine, especially on the owls.

All components are attached tightly together without wiggle. Screws are original, as probably are the remnants of felts on the bottoms.

Both pieces sit flat and stable. These are big: 6 1/4 inches tall; 6 3/4 inches wide; 3 1/2 inches deep. Combined weight is 9 1/4 pounds.
