Total Dimensions: 18-1/2" x 12-7/8" x 2. Weight: 6 Lbs, 7 Oz. Made in Troy, New York USA. Philo Penfield Stewart, inventory of the Ideal cook stove, was also a mechanic, teacher, missionary, founder of Oberlin college, reformer, and philanthropist. Born in Sherman, Connecticut on July 6, 1798.

Penfield attended the Pawlet, Vermont Academy and learned the trade of harness making. At the age of twenty-three he traveled to Mississippi as a missionary to the Choctaw Indians.

In 1832 he landed in Elyria, Ohio where planned and assisted in the founding Oberlin College. While there he invented the P. Stewart Summer and Winter Cooking Stove.

The first iteration of his Ideal cooking stove. For years he continued to improve the design of his cook stove, later adding the improved reservoir and back-closet. In 1859 Penfield obtained a patent for his'Large Oven and Air-Tight Cooking Stove'. During his residence in New York City he became actively associated with the Abolition leaders of the day, namely James G.

Whittier, and Theodore Weld, Penfield believed in liberty with an intensity that knew no bounds. He fought against tyranny and slavery for the entire last half of his life. Penfield never acquired great wealth, instead choosing to give to charities and those in need. For many years Penfield was a deacon of the Congregational Church in Troy and contributed greatly to support it. Penfield died on December 13, 1868.

His death was sincerely mourned by all classes of society. His remains were conveyed to Pittsford, Vermont and buried amongst his relatives. See Photos for Additional Details. Thank you for Supporting Small Business.
