Antique Art Deco Cubism panther lion art sculpture, cast iron, A. Notari, 12 lbs

  
A fierce panther rendered in Cubist style and presented on a rectangular base, the top of which has some texture to suggest uneven ground. I found a similar piece on 1stDibs which shows the name A. Notari inscribed on the tail.

Presumably that is the sculptor, but I have not found any information on such an artist. That entry also shows the big cat has an arrow embedded in its left hind quarters, which explains that trailing leg and the yowling expression - this animal is in pain. My piece has no name inscribed, nor arrow; but otherwise is identical in form and dimensions. Cast in iron (yes, a magnet sticks), I assume in 2 pieces with the figure then welded to the base.

I find no foundry marks. But it surely was a high-end one as this is not a casual piece to cast. Probably European, and probably 1930 based on artistic style.

No damage to any metal components. Finish has variegated look, with touches of green-ish / brown-ish / rust-ish coloring throughout the animal and the base. It may be that some of it IS rust, but certainly not all. I believe most of it is a deliberate affect though I don't know how it was achieved. In any event, I think it makes the piece more interesting looking than if it was a uniform black or gray overall. 7 3/4 inches tall; base is 13 3/4 inches X 5 3/4 inches. Perfect gift for the person who wants an intimidating sculpture to guard her treasures. This item is in the category "Art\Art Sculptures".
